Kuala Selangor Fireflies

A brief introduction to the Kuala Selangor fireflies

About a few weeks ago, me also went to Kuala Selangor. It's about an hour drive away from KL. Kuala Selangor is most popular for their fireflies sanctuary. The fireflies sanctuary is actually located in Kampung Kuantan, Kuala Selangor. Adult fireflies will synchronously flash on berembang trees and according to the boatman, the fireflies population at Kg. Kuantan had declined significantly due to pollution and erosion occurring at the river banks.

The sanctuary area is a protected area and in the day, the whole river don't look welcoming at all. Rumours of crocodiles found in the river add to my anxiety. Motor boats were not allow as the loud noises of the engines will scare away the fireflies, so only sampan row by local boatmen are allow. Camera flashes and torches are forbidden and adequate mosquito repellent is advisable. Each sampan can only accommodate up to 4 person each time and upon night falls, sampan after sampan starts to row about 1km downriver for tourists to enjoy the beauty of the blinking fireflies.

As dusk falls

Me at the jetty while waiting for total darkness so that we can set out

Finally, after about 5 minutes downriver, blinking fireflies can be seen. The fireflies twinkle among the berembang trees like lights on Christmas trees. We were brought up close to look at the individual firefly flashing. It was a very pretty sight that worth the risk of the crocodiles below because along the whole stretch of the river of 1 km or so, fireflies congregate the trees and male fireflies blink to catch the attention of female fireflies. We just sit in silent as we take in the beauty of the sight that beholds us and the insect sounds.

We actually arrived Kuala Selangor early so we also went up Bukit Melawati which is also in Kuala Selangor. The sun up Bukit Melawati is extremely scorching but the view up there is very beautiful. Bukit Melawati is actually popular for their monkeys and the Kuala Selangor light house. The monkeys up there are of different species, we saw silver and gold monkeys! Besides the monkeys have extremely long tails. I was tired at the end of the day but im really happy to had decided to go after all. :)

I really like this pic. This pic reminds me of the phrase 'All or Nothing'. Sometimes in life, don't we feel that we own everything in the world but at times, life seems so empty, as if nothing is left but yet the line between emptiness and fullness is just one thin line apart
