Chicpop

Forensic has been pretty awesome so far. It's certainly something very refreshing and interesting to watch as organs are being slice and body open up to determine the cause of death. Of course, there's like a whole lot more to Forensic but I'm not gna frighten you guys with too much details here. At least not in this post.

Of course, with CNY around the corner, being in KL now is the perfect timing to go scout for some new clothes too. hehe. CNY is such fun time to give ourselves more valid reasons for shopping. I went down to Jaya One last Sat for the #Chicpop street market and it was certainly a worthy shopping scout. It was indeed awesome to be able to really see, feel and even try all those clothes and accessories that I often browse from those familiar blogshops. No need to worry if the clothes wont fit nicely or if the color or quality is not as it appears to be or if there are unseen defects etc.

The street market
I even met Ave there. Such coincidence. Jaya One is also the place where we first got to know each other. People with great fashion sense thinks alike. haha!
My shopping steal. Pretty much tempted to buy more actually but at the same time, the trend these days is back to the 70s so a lot of grandmama look-alike clothes and I kinda don't fancy that right now.

We got there quite late so we only had about 2 hours to shop because they started closing at 6pm. And it's pretty humid and hot there so its better to dress as casually as possible. I was only wearing jeans because the place I went to after that wasnt so appropriate for shorts. Anyways, heres some of my steal of the day.
#1 - Ruffled flowery sheer top
#2 - Grandmama top. Somehow i managed to persuade myself to get one of this grandmama top
#3- So for CNY - a red dress
#4 - Supre polka dress
#5- Scallop black skirt
#6- Love ring
#7- Rabbit ring to welcome the rabbit year hehe. I find myself quite attracted to accessories these days. And they are not cheap too! *wallet cry*
#8 - Vintage bag. I tried really hard to resist buying another bag but this is only RM 42. Cannot tahan. Plus I need a vintage bag to go with my grandmama top. *defending self*
Shopping is really something very therapeutic for us girls. At least for me it is like my comfort food. hahahaha. I know shopping is not food but it has the same effect. I love looking at all my new stuff. Seriously if only theres some magic or spell that can make old clothes disappear automatically every month to make space for new ones, I will go all distance to master that magic. haha. :p Alrite, enough of crap. Im feeling stuporous already. Goodnite everyone. And till my next update, have a happy week ahead. :)

O.M.G

I'm currently down in KL and will be here for another whole week for our forensic posting. I'm so excited looking forward to start our first forensic autopsy because finally it's like CSI or Bones coming true from behind the i***t box. But not only do we get to experience some dose of CSI and Bones, we will also get to breathe the happy urbanization air of KL for one whole week. Definitely something that all of us very much welcome. hehe. It's such good timing to do some shopping for the coming CNY and to whack some really good food.

But of course aside from shopping, eating, movies and more shopping, eating and movies, why not spare some time to go catch a play too? Especially when you can also do charity at the same time. The KDU Pre-U department is organizing a play to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Fund which is under the guardian of Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya. Their play entitled O.M.G. which stands for Oh My Girl! is an adaptation of Shakespeare's the Taming of the Shrew.

Proudly a students production!
The play screens next week on the 26th, 27th and 29th January 2011 in the newly renovated Auditorium, KDU University College Damansara Jaya Campus. The details of the shows are as follow.

Date: 26 Jan 2011
Time: 2pm
Price: RM 15

Date: 27 Jan 2011
Time: 7pm
Price: RM 15

Date: 29 Jan 2011
Time: 7pm
Price: RM 100/200

The preview screening on the 26th and 27th is a smart casual event while on the 29th the play would be screened in a black tie event where tickets are inclusive of a 3 course Italian Meal. Tables for the 29th Jan show are available at RM800 or RM 1600 per table with 8 seats on each table.

The Children's Cancer Fund or Tabung Kanser Kanak-Kanak aims to help financially disadvantaged children aged as young as 6 months old up to 17 years old to get access to treatments and operations necessary for them to survive the disease.

Did you know that a child with cancer needs at least RM 6000 to undergo a session of chemotheraphy? And cancer is not something that is cured in just one session. Thus, RM 6000 buys not only time but life for a child as well. By supporting the play, you will give them a chance to see what's beyond their pain.

Here's links on some videos (click here and here) which may help you to understand the cause of their event better; these are the kids whom will appreciate your time and thoughts.

Therefore, give what you can to help a cancer child. For the children, do support them in their effort to raise funds for these kids. Help more kids who have yet to learn their ABCs and 123s be able to achieve that. All profits from the play goes to the Children's Cancer Fund. :)

Tickets can be purchased from Kelvin Hong (0167536798) and Yi Lyn (0174060677).

The Best Char Siew Pau

In the whole of Malaysia imho. Yes, another foodie post. I come up with this conclusion after trying the best char siew pau the Penangites have to offer, the best the people of Ipoh proudly promoted (particularly Penang and Ipoh because both of this place are the apparent food paradise of Malaysia) and some of the 'best' ones from KL. I admit that although their char siew paus are indeed pretty good, they still fail to beat this strong contender of theirs from Johor. I will talk about this oh-so-excellent char siew pau (steamed bun with pork fillings) in a bit, so don't cheat and scroll right to the end now. :) Just to share something happy, it's really encouraging to know that @angryjedi featured my blog in his @oneadayproject blog spotlight because of my previous food posts.☺

Honestly, dim sum is not something that is very popular among the Johoreans. Somehow people in the southern region don't seem to fancy dim sum much and unlike KL, Penang or Ipoh, finding a good dim sum restaurant especially in JB can be quite a daunting task. However fortunately, I still managed to find one good dim sum restaurant that can certainly satisfy my dim sum (more specifically char siew pau) cravings whenever im back home. Tuck some 45 mins drive away from town, this gem is certainly worth driving all the way up to. This particular shop is a night dim sum shop that only opens after 6pm every day but usually in 3 hours time, all their dim sums and paus (if not all, then will only left the not so popular items) will be sold out already. It's that good business.

Their two most popular item is none other than the char siew pau (can really die for!) and da pau (big pau) that really sells like hot cakes. A lot of customers (even Singaporeans) who eat there usually will also take away the paus and each time, everyone will take away like 5-20 paus at least (explains why the paus sold out fast). They also have other paus like peanut, red bean paste, kaya etc which are not too bad themselves. Dim sum wise, their selections are pretty limited and aside from their siew mai, fried stuffed beancurd and fishballs which I like, I think the rest are just pretty ok.

The siew mai
Some steam pork thingy with onions
Fried fishballs - a little salty though
Fried stuffed beancurd. Oh love the stuffed porky.
Steam chicken
Lor mai kai which is really glutinous rice cook with chicken, pork and mushroom. This is pretty good also. More healthy because not very oily

And now, for the 2 best sellers *drum roll pls*
Their signature Da pau. (big pau). I think it's half the size of my face at least.
Normally, the fillings of a da pau (big pau) consist of chicken, pork, mushroom and egg. The bomb for this pau will be the juice that you see oozing in the picture above. And another awesome thing is that they only use lean pork and chicken so no disgusting fat. Simply delish I tell you. This one ought to win the best Da pau/dai pau/big pau/pau besar title.
Ta-da! The champion of all char siew paus! I'm not exaggerating and I don't care if you are sick of hearing me saying it so many times, but for the 100th time, this is the BEST and my most ♥ char siew pau possibly in this world. The pau is not exactly small, quite standard pau size but I can easily eat like 3-4 each time.
Look at the fillings. *drools* In case you cant make them out, they are lean char siews (no/minimal fat hurray!!) cut into tiny bits and pieces cook with sesame seed in their very own secret sauce to make it very scrumptious. The pau itself is fluffy and the fillings are neither too dry nor too 'wet'. It's just simply perfect. Super mad ♥ :)
Just thinking of it is enough to make my stomach rumbles with hunger right now. I wonder what is their secret of making such good pau. I wanna learn it too! hehe.Well, of course if any of you thinks that you have a better contender to my most love char siew pau (steam bun with pork fillings) or even da pau/big pau, you are most welcome to let me know because I can't wait to go check it out to see if they can beat my champion. :)

Kim Chi and BBQ

Since my past few posts had been about food, I'm gna continue making all of you hungry by reading this one too *bad*. I'm actually not so bad one, like intentionally want to make all of you hungry and eat more and grow fat,  it's just that most of my brain juice have been flowing in the direction of work and pending work ever since I returned to Moldyland last Sat. (no more turtleland cuz I swear I see more mold than turtle here) hence I am lazy to think of intelligent issue to talk about or whatever that requires more brain effort. I'm still procrastinating over my special study module (most distasteful assignment ever) and my 4 cwu aka reports (took 2 days to nearly finished 1. Everything else seems much more interesting #fail) and I have an upcoming test this coming Sunday. T_T But I want to keep up with my #oneaday #oneaweek, so today Im gna share about my New Year's eve dinner. (well, NY was just 13 days ago ;p)

This is the second year I had Korean for New Year's eve. I was craving for Korean food especially when it was raining cats and dogs all day and the thought of juicy bbq pork and hot ginseng chicken soup simply entices me. How nice if I was really in Korea instead eating Korean food by the ski mountain, drinking soju and feel those fluffy white snow *dream*. I really miss Korea. I wouldnt mind if any airline/tour/advertising company wanna sponsor me to Korea for New Year this year. *cough hint cough*

But honestly, my NY's eve dinner was really funtastic even though it was raining instead of snowing and we were eating in a restaurant by the busy street and not the ski mountain. In recent years, JB had a sudden influx of Korean migrates followed by the rise of many Korean restaurants around that sprout like mushrooms after rain. This Korean restaurant that we went to is open and run by a Korean family, so we still can have authentic Korean food despite the fact that we are 54321 miles away from Korea. And because it was a spontaneous decision, we did not make any reservation and was supposed to queue and wait for a table. However, the boss is such a nice man and not wanting us to wait, he opened up his function room (which can fit like 30-50 person with karaoke set) especially for us. The 4 of us plus a couple, so it was like the 6 of us had an entire floor all to ourselves with karaoke and we could sang all we want. Super shiok. :)

Metal cutleries makes it felt really like in Korea
The side dishes. I realized although all Korean restaurants will have kimchi (duh) as one of these side dish, the rest of the side dish may vary from restaurants to restaurants. The peanuts was quite delicious that I accidentally ate almost the whole plate of it. (Im not supposed to be eating peanuts recently because of certain vain reason)
Fried vermicelli with pork
Fried lettuce with bean sprouts with a tinge if spiciness
Kim chi pancake
Ginseng chicken soup
Fresh leaf lettuce - to wrap those juicy pork in. When eaten together,  the plain taste of the lettuce will balance the salty or sweet taste of pork perfectly.
The bbq pork - The first batch. I think it will be more fun doing the bbq ourselves but since we were seated at a table without the pit, they pre-bbqed our pork before serving it to us nicely on a plate.
The second batch - It was a mountain actually but only after halfway eating through, this pic was taken. The second batch one seemed to be glazed with honey because it tasted more sweet than the first.

Honestly, I think the food was really good that night. All of them except the ginseng chicken soup (which turned out to be quite a disappointment because the ginseng smell and taste wasnt strong enough) was really delicious. The pork especially was very succulent, juicy and sweet. And the best part, it's not even that expensive to be eating there. For all of these, we paid like less than RM 150 for 4 person. Max ♥ this restaurant. (I ♥ my ♥ icon hahaha.. finally knows how to insert them ♥) :)

Betty's Midwest Kitchen

 *Warning : Non-halal post ahead*

So while we were down in KL a few weeks ago, I had this sudden craving for American food and remembering how one of my friend once raved about the 'dog food' from this restaurant on his fb, I suggested Human Torch and BH to check out this place together. I mean like seriously, I sometimes find my pet dog food tempting but never would had thought that the human will ever be eating the same food as our beloved four-legged pals. But maybe the Americans do thats why Betty's sells them. hehe!

Anyway, it was after lunch time by the time we finally found the place, so the restaurant was pretty empty and the food came real fast (which was a relieved to our growling stomach). Of course, you can guess the first thing I ordered.*wink*

The DOG FOOD - Ok pls do not kill me. It's never my intention to mislead you. Trust me, its not worth it if you go to jail because of this. *puppy eyes* The 'dog food' is in fact fries drenched in gravy with melted cheese on top. It is called 'dog food' only because it is served on a plate that looks like the plate that is typically use to served our four-legged pals food. Eat it while it's hot else when the fries turn all soggy, it would not taste good anymore.
6 pieces of Pig-in-a-blanket - Oven-cooked pork cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon. The sweet sausages with the saltish bacon popped just right in the mouth.
Classical meatloaf - Classical Mid-west style pork meatloaf with their very own beer-based dip. That piece of meatloaf may look small, but it is quite filling indeed. Tastewise, I find it pretty average only. Not too much to my liking.
Pulled-pork burger - In between the burger bun is roasted pork braised with Betty's special sauce. The pork is roasted and braised until they are really soft and juicy. And they are nice enough to swap the fries with mash potatoes for me even though they initially say they can't. Seriously, the mash potatoes is super awesome. It's those kind that melts straight in the mouth. I'm totally in love with their mash potatoes.
Pork Chop with Orange Cream - I must say the pork chop is excellently pan fried. And the orange cream complimented it pretty well. I feared it will be too weird but it turned out very good.
Bread pudding with vanilla ice cream - Honestly the bread pudding is quite average also. Nothing much to shout about.
We definitely had a good lunch there and although I believe the real American portion will be way larger, I think Betty's Kitchen is worth a visit especially for their dog food and pork chop. :)

Belly Good

*warning : non-halal post ahead*

Is seriously very good. Even to a fussy pork lover like me. A few weeks ago when Human Torch and I were in KL, we decided to go try out this restaurant after fftt K recommended it to us and last Christmas, we had another met up with some of our friends there. Hence, this is a combined review from both of our visits there.

Mr and Mrs Pig head. haha.
Appetizer : Baked Portabello Mushroom with bacon and cheese. My mum will never imagine I would ever give a thumb up to this or anything associated with mushroom for that matter as me and mushroom are just never meant to be. (me dislike mushroom la) But this mushroom is not like any mushroom I had tried. It's crispy and slightly crunchy on the outside at first bite and as you chew further, the sweet juice from the mushroom will ooze out slowly tantalizing your tastebuds. Of course, the bacon and cheese helps perfect the whole sensation. (I may not be that good at describing it but in short, it's super yum that this is the only mushroom I will say yes to)
Mixed platter - A combination of grilled pork belly and grilled pork rib accompanied with homemade mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Both the pork belly and prok rib is amazingly succulent and tender. So so yum can.
Trio platter - It's similar to the mixed platter, the only difference being this has an added pork chorizo sausage. Two words - Super yum.
Grilled sausage platter - A combination of 4 types of sausages; pork chorizo, spicy Hungarian, chicken chorizo and garlic oriental served with fries. However, mine was served with mash potatoes as I'm trying to reduce my intake of fries these days. Honestly, I can't differentiate between the 4 starlets except for the chicken one which tasted like chicken of course. :p The sausages are all real fat, juicy and superbly delicious.
Pork burger - I find these the least satisfying because that small (albeit the fact it's quite a thick piece of meat) piece of pork in between the bread are certainly not enough to satisfy the palate especially with each bite into those pork, it'll def leaves you wanting for more. I find the pork less juicy here too.
Bacon spaghetti - The bacon is just as promising as the rest. It's sauteed just right and the tinge of spiceness further adds flavor to the spaghetti.
Stewed cinnamon apple - The combination of the sweet and cold ice cream with the warm fresh stewed apple top with cinnamon juice adds a perfect end to the delicious meal.
During Christmas, they had this Christmas special and this is their Christmas special cake. Although it looked very much like brownie, but it's not really as chocolatety as brownie. A bit less sweet, has a more fluffy texture and goes well with ice cream too.

Belly Good is def on my list of one of my fav place to go for a good pork meal. It leaves my belly very happy and palates dancing in joy at the end of each meal. Besides, their cosy ambience makes the place even more welcoming. Quoting Belly Good, it's really the pork lover's paradise. :)

Cafe Para-Para

I'm in a pretty stuporous state right now. Half of mind is drifted somewhere in lalaland and the other half is here still semi-consciously typing this. I can still feel the food I had eaten earlier in the night getting friendly with each other in the comfort of my stomach. I really love to just slumber off if not because the digestion process that is taking place in my tummy is keeping me awake instead. Jan is such an exciting month because we have so many birthdays around. Just a few days ago, it was SL and JY's. In the next few days it'll be CL, CW then ST and mumsy too.

So because I'm going back to turtleland tomorow (omg why did 2 weeks flew by so quickly), we decided to have an early celebration for mumsy. We choosed to go try out this buffet which is the main culprit of why I felt like fat, spoilt Garfield right now and Im gna exposed these culprits to all of you right now. Buffet is always such a bad choice. Dont get me wrong. I love a good buffet probably just as much as anyone of you do. It's the after effects that I do not fancy. :p

Fresh mussels, oysters and prawns
Salad and fruits
Mee Soto Ayam
Sashimis and various meat loaf
The gingerbread house from Christmas is still there! haha
Can diy your own ice kacang too.

I cannot remember how many rounds I ate, maybe 5-6? Everything looks so yummy I just had to try a little of everything.
The prawn salad, squid salad and stuffed tofu
Har Lok prawns, chilli crabs, Nasi Hujan Panas, grilled fishes and mixed vegetables
Fresh oysters
O_o
Chicken cordon bleu and seafood lasagna
Laksa Johor
Szechuan fish maw soup
Jeruk
Desserts!! <3
Mango sago
Ice creams
Happy birthday in advance, mumsy! Love you lots xoxo :)
Generally I think the food is quite ok especially for hotels standard. After all a lot of hotels buffet are overrated. The oysters are fresh at least and the chilli crab and desserts were quite good. Besides they do have quite a lot of varieties of food (which explains why I can be so stuffed), so make sure you put on your best buffet outfit and bring an empty stomach the next time you plan to whack yourself silly with food.

Alritey the other half of my mind is shutting down too now. So I'm off and out, probably going to dream of more food. hehe. Toodles! :)
