Racing

My heart that is. After being in a complete dilemma for the past few days, I finally came up with the 3 choices. Funny but how listing down 3 choices can be so difficult. If not because of the dateline, I dont think I'll ever get my head around to this, hence having a dateline is a very good thing actually. This issue is such a head exploder so much so that it's the last thing on my mind when I went to bed, it's the first thing on my head when I wake up, it interrupts my thoughts when I'm studying, when I'm in the toilet and even when I'm eating. As long as I'm not occupied talking to someone, it is there. Just turning round and round and round and round. I wish all the facts and figures will work that way in my head so that I'll never forget them instead. Anyhoos, after some narrowing down starting from the places that I absolutely do not want to work at to places that I hope to work in, I'm left with these few final choices and after some intense discussion and 'research', at last I had pen down the big 3.

I had spent the whole morning trying to give the reasons for my choices. It's not that I'm planning to write pages of essays to support my choices (although I heard they are really people who do), it's just all my reasons are pretty much the same, so I'm trying to add some variant to each of them to make my first choice reasons more solid than the rest at least. But when I finally am done filling up the whole form, my heart started racing with excitement. I don't know why, but all of a sudden, I felt a surge of nervousness and excitement running through me. It felt so surreal that I'm really going to start working soon. That I'm really gonna be graduating soon. That the 5 years journey is so close to the end. I imagine myself working in Hosp A, B and C and the type of colleagues and seniors I will be working with. I started picturing the hospital itself and what will it be like to work 2 years in that place. And it turns out to be quite fun. I mean in my imagination because all my colleagues are nice people and my bosses are nice too. haha! Anyway it's not like the government will definitely give us our choices, they just wants us to put it there so they can evaluate and consider and who knows at the end of the day, I won't even get any of my 3 choices. *choi, touch wood*

But before any of these becomes reality, I have to pass my exam first. My speed of reading is even slower than the snail. Seriously, why doesnt any scientist comes up with a memory booster or a google search for the brain. So, ciao everyone. Have a good midweek :)

Taiwan Iron Eggs

Known in Mandarin as the 'tie dan' or what some of my friends call the metal eggs. Either way they are all the same thing, a popular local Taiwan snack. They are pretty much called the iron eggs because these eggs are really much harder than any other type of eggs. They can be made from both quail or chicken eggs. These eggs are stew in soy sauce and a whole other spices repeatedly, over and over again until all the flavors from the stew are fully absorbed into the eggs and then air dried.

Hence, the eggs are more flavorful when compared to normal boil or even tea eggs and they have these mixture of salty and sweet in them. Although their color might not be so appetizing, being brownish black but I find them quite delightful. It's like the more you eat them, the more delicious they get. Besides, I like them because they are very chewy so it makes very good snack when I'm itching for something to munch on. However, it can get quite filling eating them, so even though they are small in size (quail eggs), eating about 5-6 is enough to make me full. Not forgetting, eggs being eggs, they are still high in cholesterol so it's better not to eat too much at a time.

It must be a really unique and famous snack of Taiwan because almost all my friends that came back from Taiwan would buy us back these as a souvenir. So all thanks to them, the next time I go to Taiwan, I don't have to buy these back anymore. haha! When my friend came over to Moldyland to visit us last Sunday, he too brought us these iron eggs. I tweeted and Mariuca ask me what was it, so I decided to blog about them.

The iron eggs. After eating them, you'll turn into Ironman! haha.I know lame, pls ignore. Just needed to destress somewhere.
Somehow they remind me of the grape-like structures of hydatiform mole in molar pregnancy. Lol
The larger chicken iron eggs.
Somehow the chicken eggs are even harder than the quail ones. This is the 1st time I tried the chicken eggs and I think I still like the quail ones better. Cause the quail ones are smaller and less saltier.
The iron eggs comes in assorted flavors too. This is garlic flavor quail iron eggs. Honestly, I felt that it tasted better than all it's other flavors (comparatively to black pepper and spicy). The garlic taste not strong at all one, if any it's just a tinge of it.
The black pepper flavor. The black pepper taste also not strong one. It just gives a hint of spiciness on top of the saltiness and sweetness of the iron eggs.
Quail iron eggs. I like.
The difference in size between the iron eggs. Besides, the eggs also underwent poikilocytosis after being repeatedly stewed. The eggs become more squarish instead of being usually round or oval.

On a totally unrelated note, I was playing around with the camera 360 programme on my phone this afternoon and I found this mode I really like. I'm gonna call it the magic mode cuz it makes my face looks extremely smooth and makes all dark circles disappear. It's my favourite mode to camwhore right now. So I ended up camwhoring a little, something which I had not done in a while. So here, just to share some camwhoring pics with you guys. Till then, hope all of you will have a great weekend ahead. :)

Dilemma Dilemma Dilemma

I want some magic right now.*Magic magic magic* I wish for some magic right now to make my dilemma disappear. It's like my head is so full of where, why, where, why, where, why going in circles round and round without an exit.

It had been quite a while since I last face with a dilemma as great as this. Sure, after SPM I was faced with the dilemma of whether to continue STPM or to take up A-levels/foundations/SAM but that quickly got settled as my parents kinda made up the decision for me. Then even after STPM, to decide which uni and course to major in was quite clear cut and I didn't had much of a dilemma.

Up until now. I always thought this day will not come so soon, but it's here finally. I often thought that I will automatically know where to put, which hospital to choose when the day comes, but right now, when the day has finally arrive, my mind is even more blank than ever. Even though I does occasionally thinks about it especially after my friends or family asked me about where do I want to work after I graduate (a popular topic of conversation since I started final yr), I usually brushed it off thinking that when the day comes, the questions will answer for itself. Unfortunately, this is not the case here. We had been handed the BMD (Borang Maklumat Diri) a few weeks ago and everytime I look at it, I'm in as much of a dilemma as I'm now, if not even more with each passing day so much so that I just left it sitting in a corner of my room silently, wishing that someday when I wake up, 'poof, I will instantaneously know which 3 hospitals to choose'. There are simply too many factors to consider, from family to HT to chances of specialization in future etc.

Most of the people I know will definitely put back their hometown as their first choice simply because working back in hometown means being closer to family and friends back home. Working back in hometown means getting to live in your very own comfort zone, where your family are close by. You know that you'll be able to get good emotional support from them and will be supposedly taken good care of; they will provide you with proper daily meals, take care of your house chores, to comfort you when you are being scolded by your specialist and to offer you listening ears and hugs when you cannot find comfort anywhere else. That is provided you have a supportive and understanding family and not one that creates more drama to add more stress to your life. I know it sounds as though we are so pampered these days, but it's not like we cannot live independently (for me). The thing is, who doesn't like to have their meals and chores being taken care of? Who doesn't want  it when you are so stress and on the verge of breaking down and there's all those never ending support readily available? Especially with all the horror stories we hear of housemanship in Malaysia, after working 36 hours straight, who will want to spend it doing house chores instead? And if we are closer to our family, we can also take care of our parents especially.

But even after deciding the state that I want to work in, I do not know exactly which hospital to put as my 1st choice. Well rumors had it that JB are lacking of housemen so whichever hospital that you put as your first choice will be the one that you'll likely get. So it's back to like whether I want to work in a hospital that is already flooding with HOs or one that is newly developing. Or one that is nearer to home or further from home.

Then if I work back in my hometown and HT work back in his, it would means that we have to go through the challenge of LDR. Actually, for some, where they choose to work depends on their partners but I guess for us, it will be really up to fate ( dont want to believe in fate this time also cannot) of whether we will be posted to the same hospital anot.

I actually did consider applying to Sabah too because actually I dont really mind working in KK itself. Furthermore my bro is there, so I'm not exactly all alone if I got posted there but one thing a lot of people are saying is that, once you get posted there, you hardly gets to come back to West Malaysia anymore simply because no one else wants to go there to take over you. And the thing is, once anyone writes Sabah or Sarawak as one of their choices, they will almost definitely get their choice one so unless I'm really sure I want to work there, I cannot just simply write it as one of my choices now to decide later.

Honestly, this must be one of the toughest 3 choices I will ever have to made in my life. I know life is full of tough choices but this is definitely one of it. We have to submit in the form real soon already so no matter how much I'll like to live in denial, the time has come to face reality. We had a taklimat by the MOH and also the SPA this morning and that's like a snoozer to wake up from denial. I like to challenge myself to break away from my comfort zone but deep down, I know my family will miss me badly and I will miss home too no matter what so I dont think I can escape from putting my hometown hospitals among my choices. The other choices might be other nearby states or at least somewhere with a direct flight! I really wish that when I wake up tomorrow, the choices will be crystal clear suddenly. #hopingformiracle. I wish I didn't have to consider so much or that I have the courage to just pick Sabah or Sarawak without thinking so much. I need some comfort food right now. My head is almost exploding from thinking about this already. It's time for a break from thinking about this. :)

RM 1000 Diabetic Shoe

I just went to collect our research project final report from the bookshop, nicely binded and all with the hardcover finally. Yes, it's the community medicine research project that we did last year. Even though we were done with the whole research and even the Diabetes Interventional Programme last year before our Professional II exam itself, our final report was only completed recently thanks to alterations and changes that needed to be done. On top of that, as we went through all our other rotations, we were too busy with each of the rotations that the final report just got more and more forgotten. And of course, it doesn't help when the editor is such a procrastinator. haha. Actually I'm done editing the whole report quite a while ago, it's just that somewhere from the printing right up to the binding process, there was some minor hindrance causing the further delay. Well, if not because handing up the final report is part of the pre-requisite for our coming Profesional III exam, I'm pretty sure that final report would had remained sitted in my hard disc for the rest of it's life.

It's almost one year since we did the whole research thingy and I suddenly felt this sense of nostalgia now that our final report is ready to be handed up. We started learning how to do the whole research from scratch, much not to my expectation of what research is like and I can still remember the frustration we felt  searching for houses without addresses to do our survey and learning how to do the SPSS which I'm pretty sure all of us had forgotten at least 80% of it by now. Then there was all those time and energy we sacrificed putting together the Diabetes Interventional Programme to give free health screening and health education to the residents of Kg Tasek in Bukit Payung (the village we were assigned to).

But honestly, I think the most fun time we had during our whole research last year was during the Diabetes Interventional Programme. It was alot of work no doubt, from finding a suitable area to host the event to finding sponsors to distributing flyers to the villagers to cleaning up and setting up the place to food preparation, but it was a very productive day at least and the villagers had fun playing games, participating in the coloring contest and getting free health screening and health education.

Finally done. :)
1 Malaysia, 1 teaspoon. What we are really trying to convey is, reduce your sugar intake!
Food preparation.
The 'hall' we had the talk and opening ceremony.
The exhibition team setting up the exhibits.
Models of diabetic foot. A complication of diabetes.
The diabetic shoe. Guess how much is it?
It's RM 500 per side. Meaning it's RM 1000 for one pair of diabetic shoe!! I cannot believe it too when I was first told but after hearing about how it works, it does seems to help the diabetic foot patient a lot.
The inside of the shoe. It's so special because the 'biji-biji' thing can be removed accordingly to the site of foot ulcer (s) so that there wont be pressure on the site of ulcer (s) thus worsening the condition.
The cheaper one at RM 250 per side.
Other medical brochures and pamplets.
One YB sponsored us these hampers to be given out as lucky draw prizes.
Registration.
Our associate dean and lecturers taking a sneak peek at the exhibits.

Villagers started coming in at about 9.30am.
The VIPs of the day.
Kumar, our chairman giving his welcome speech.
Opening ceremony.
Souvenir was given to the village headman as a token of appreciation for allowing us to host the campaign in his village.
A reporter from Berita Harian was also there to interviewe Kumar regarding our health campaign. The article actually came out in the newspaper! :)

Health screening counters.
Trying to suck it in. hahaha
Coloring contest.
One of the happy winner of the lucky draw.
Group 2 - the most awesome group that made this posssible.
In the end, there were more than a 100 villagers that turned up that day which exceeded our expectation. Besides, the Berita Harian reporter also came and featured us in an article in the paper. Everyone had worked really hard for the health campaign but I believed all our hard work paid off. We also like to thank all the lecturers that had came to give their support and those that had assisted us in making the event a success. This too, will definitely be part of my memory as a medical student forever. :)

Num Banh Choc

Cambodia post.

This has gotta be one of my favourite Cambodia dish. It's usually a breakfast staple of rice noodle fish soup, but not quite the same as our Chinese Teowchew fish head/ fish noodle soup. It consisted of pounded fish meat with lemongrass and fish sauce with coconut milk base broth in a subtle yellow greenish color with fresh rice noodle. On our 3rd day in Phnom Penh, Napich (for first time readers, Napich is my Cambodian friend) invited us over to his house for lunch. It was really a privileged to have the chance to sample some authentic home cook Cambodian food.

After a warm welcome, our lunch was immediately served. Our lunch for the day was prepared by Napich's sister-in-law and honestly, his sister-in-law makes really good Num Banh Choc. Aside from the rice noodles, the Num Banh Choc was served with bean sprouts, grated cucumbers, shredded banana blossoms, chopped spring onions and baby chilis (chili padi).

Fresh rice noodles.
Chopped spring onions and shredded banana blossoms.
Grated cucumbers and baby chilis with salt and sugar to add.
The key ingredient to a good bowl of Num Banh Choc is the broth I felt and this pot of broth is awesomeness.
Voila! A hot yummy bowl of Num Banh Choc. Can you see the abundant pounded fishes? In a sense it's like our Malaysia Penang laksa with the pounded fishes. I omitted the bean sprouts because I don't like bean sprouts.
Nom nom time. Two thumbs up definitely. :)
I totally enjoyed the simple yet delicious lunch. Well actually it may seems simple, but I suppose the broth preparation can be quite tedious too, having to clean and debone the fishes and then pound them etc. The num banh choc was so good that I went for a second helping and Human Torch went for 3 helpings! I really love how they have a tinge of spicy plus minty taste and it's not too sourish nor is it too sweet or salty. We really like to thank Napich for the invite and for his sister-in-law for preparing such a delicious Cambodian staple for us. I am so missing it right now. It will be perfect if I can have a bowl of Num Banh Choc serve this very moment. :)
